I don’t know about you, but this time of year (especially) my hair becomes so dry. In the winter we moisturize our skin on the daily, get added pedicure treatments for dry heels, but we don’t normally change up our hair products to accommodate the dry, cold weather. This is why I have been on the lookout for the best products for dry hair.
The Best Products For Dry Hair
Stepping up your hair care game this time of year might be necessary if you already have dry, damaged hair, get chemical treatments, and use styling tools several times per week.
I have been happy with the hair products I normally use until recently. My hair has been feeling more like the consistency of straw instead of spun silk. So after researching about the Olaplex Hair System, I decided to give it a try. This is what I found:
Olaplex Bond Maintenance Shampoo & Conditioner
First of all, the smell is divine! I’m very particular with scents and don’t typically like things smelling too fruity or over-powering. Olaplex has a very soft, sweet grapefruit scent that I couldn’t get enough of when in the shower.
A grape-sized dollop in my hand was all I needed from both the shampoo and conditioner. I had been finding with my old hair duo, that I needed to keep increasing the amount I was using to get the same effect. With Olaplex, the moisture infused lather felt so good and made it easy for me to comb my fingers through my hair while in the shower.
And get this…I didn’t even need to use a detangler spray to comb my hair out post-shower!
What Gives Our Hair Shiny Smoothness
Our hair is made up of millions of disulfide bonds, which gives our hair structure, strength, and stability. When these bonds are broken it results in damage. Olaplex’s claim to fame is the restoration of the hair’s disulfide bonds with a chemical called Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate.
After looking it up on EWG (the Environmental Working Group’s website), I found that most of the chemical makeup of this product line was safe, but they do use “fragrance” which automatically gives the safety of the line, not such good marks. Each of the products in the line has safety ratings ranging from 4-6 (all in the moderate range, due to the fragrance)
So it is recommended that if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or nursing, you should not use these products. Stick with a product line (such as Beautycounter) that doesn’t use synthetic fragrance in any of their products.
How To Use The Olaplex Hair System
My hair is color treated with highlights. In the winter I tend to use a hair dryer most days instead of letting my hair dry naturally and if I don’t wash my hair, I use a curling iron to tame my bed-head.
So I’ve settled into using the No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo & the No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner most day of the week. Before styling, I use the No.7 Bonding Oil to prevent breakage due to heat. This bonding oil protects your hair up to 450-degree heat, repairs any damage, and makes it smooth and shiny.
Fried Hair Fix
If you have more significant damage to your hair and need more intense deep conditioning, you may want to add in the No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment combined with the No.3 Hair Perfecter over it, whenever you are feeling your hair needs some extra love.
- Massage the No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment into your hair and scalp
- Leave on a full 10 minutes by itself
- Add the No.3 Hair Perfecter over it
- Let sit for 30-45 minutes max with a shower cap on
- Rinse, Wash, Condition, and style as normal

Changing up your hair care system during the colder months when we tend to use a dryer and curling/flat iron more regularly, may be necessary to achieve smooth, shiny, healthy looking hair.
Using a weekly or even a monthly hair mask to deep condition is recommended for over-treated and over-styled hair. So you can turn your dry, over-processed, winter hair into glorious spun silk!
