Best All Natural Deodorant That Works
AAAHHH! Why are my armpits itchy when I use a “natural” deodorant? I had been searching for a long time to find a “clean” deodorant. One without aluminum, parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance. The problem is that I would become so darn itchy that I would stop using it and return to my usual toxic variety. But, finally… I have found the best natural deodorant that works!
Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant
Most of you may know the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants, right? A deodorant blocks body odor or the odor-causing bacteria while still allowing sweat to happen. An antiperspirant actually blocks the sweat glands with aluminum, so you can’t sweat under your arms. Some say that using antiperspirants with aluminum can cause breast cancer. There still needs to be more studies on this, but I personally know a lot of doctors who don’t use antiperspirants for this reason. So…I’m going with that.
Why The Itch When Switching To Natural Deodorant
After doing a lot of research, I have found a couple of factors in natural formulas that seem to be the common denominators for the “itch”.
Baking soda is a common ingredient in natural deodorants. Some brands use more baking soda than others. The problem isn’t always due to an allergic reaction to the baking soda (although it can be for some), but rather the PH of the baking soda. (which usually is in the 8-9 range of alkalinity when our bodies like to maintain a PH close to 7.4). If the baking soda concentration is too high it can be abrasive. Plus if the formula is sticky or waxy, it will create the perfect combo for chafing.
For some brands, they say to add a neutralizer like Apple Cider Vinegar to your pits before applying the natural deodorant, but….uh, uh. No can do! I’m not that girl. Some brands like Bubble & Bee have a pit neutralizer you can buy and put on prior to their natural deodorant, but again…not my style, plus too complicated.
I’ve also found that Tea Tree Oil can burn the heck out of my pits, giving me a rash. Usually, a natural deodorant made without scents can be easier on the pits. But, if you do want scent, having one scented with essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance is healthier.
Did you know that most pit rashes aren’t actually caused by the natural deodorant ingredients, but caused by these 3 reasons?
- Intertrigo- Red, raw areas that start in the crease of skin and grow from there. Can be accompanied by itching and flaking. This is caused by moist skin rubbing against itself.
- Heat Rash– A rash of pimple-like bumps that itch and burn. Caused by sweat getting trapped in your skin. You need a powder-based product to help draw out the moisture and keep you dry.
- Fungal Infection– This will usually show up as an itchy, patchy rash that may have an irregular ring around the edge. Visit a doctor as you may need an anti-fungal cream.

Best All Natural Deodorant That Works
I’m going to cut right to the chase on my favorite deodorant, instead of listing all of the deodorants I’ve tried first and saving the best for the last. Everyone’s body is different and some products work better on some people more than others. But using a deodorant (not antiperspirant) that neutralizes body odor, doesn’t cause itching or irritation, and absorbs sweat, were my goals on what I was looking for in the perfect deodorant.
Beautycounter’s Clean Deo
It’s all that! (and more) Let me explain how it works, how it’s clean, and is sustainable.
The combination of cornstarch and baking soda neutralizes body odor, glides on smooth (not gritty), does not stain clothes, and is non-irritating! Actually 100% of the 115 person test on this product, (using daily for 2 weeks) said that they had no irritation or itching! That’s very impressive for a natural deodorant. Coconut Oil and Shea butter hydrate, nourish, and smooth, and its use of Candelilla wax and beeswax condition and hydrate the skin.
100% of the 115 person test market (using daily for 2 weeks) said that they had no irritation or itching!”
Probably one of the cleanest of the clean deodorants out there. Why? Because there are no aluminum, synthetic fragrances, or even trace contaminants of heavy metals in there. Beautycounter prides itself on testing every batch of their products for that reason. Heavy metals are a natural bi-product of ingredient sourcing, so it’s good to know that they have our back on this one.
The Clean Deo comes in 3 different scents: Fresh Coconut, Soft Lavender, and Clean Rose. I have all three and am still trying to decide which one I like best. It’s possible that Coconut is ahead by a notch because it smells like the beach I didn’t get to spend enough time on this summer.
Have you ever wondered what happens to all of those plastic parts that come with our personal care products? I have. When you think about all of that plastic sitting in a landfill, I hope you are thinking that there must be a better way. There is actually. A few companies are starting to use new methods for reducing those plastic parts.
With the Clean Deo, you get one applicator for life with your first purchase. Every subsequent purchase you receive a new deodorant drop-in for your applicator. The applicators are actually very pretty with solid colored containers that would look nice on any bathroom counter.
Why The Clean Deo Is My Favorite
- non-irritating…I do not itch with it
- absorbs perspiration
- neutralizes body odor
- glides on smooth with no gritty residue
- smells amazing
- pretty reusable applicator
- does not stain clothing
Other All-Natural Deodorants That Actually Work Too
All of the deodorants you see here, I’ve tried. My favorites of the bunch would be Native’s Unscented or Primally Pure.
I love Native‘s customer service even better than their deodorant, but still, this one is my second choice. I can use the unscented without any itchiness or irritation. These two have given me the least amount of discomfort but I’m still on my quest for what’s best for me.
Primally Pure’s Geranium Deodorant which contains kaolin clay (a powerful detoxifier), non-nano zinc (soothes irritation), a tad bit of baking soda, grass-fed tallow, fair trade coconut oil, arrowroot powder, beeswax, and essential oils. I liked the way it smells and feels but it ended up causing me irritation.
Others that missed the mark for me
Primal Pit Paste is another deodorant stick that I can use without irritation. It is lightly scented but is very tacky and hard to put on. It also leaves little beads of deodorant chunks in your pits. So, I didn’t like it.
Norwex makes a nice crystal deodorant. Basically, a crystal deodorant is a mineral salt or potassium alum. It has anti-microbial properties to kill the odor-causing bacteria. The jury is out though on its actual effectiveness. Crystal deodorants work for many but it does come down to each individual’s body chemistry. Apparently, not mine.
Ursa Major, Yes To Cucumbers, Earth Science Tea Tree & Lavender, and Eminence Deodorants all caused me to itch or rash up. Not saying these are bad but if you have sensitive skin like me, you may want to avoid them.
Out of all of the natural deodorants I’ve tried, Beautycounter’s Clean Deo is my favorite. It neutralizes my pit odor (even during my workout)√, glides on smooth without any irritation√, absorbs perspiration √, and doesn’t stain my clothes √. Sometimes using a natural deodorant takes a few weeks to really work because your pits need to detoxify. Another thing to try while in the detoxifying phase is to use the Charcoal mask on your pits and the Charcoal Soap to wash with. Seriously, it works. Or use baking soda free deodorants to avoid the PH irritation associated with baking soda.
