Do you like listening to podcasts? One of my favorite things I love doing lately is going for long walks and listening to podcasts. There is something so inspirational to me about listening to an uplifting narrative about how people overcame adversity. Why? Because we all have had some sort of adversity to overcome in our lives. And if you haven’t yet…sister, look out! Because it will be knocking on your door at some point. I’m not trying to be pessimistic… it’s just life.
Adversity, otherwise known as difficulties or misfortune, is a fact of life. Some people will say that they’ve never really encountered “adversity” but only opportunities to help them grow.
There is no education like adversity. – Benjamin Disraeli
Ask any successful person how easy it was to get where they are today and they will tell you about the difficulties, the setbacks, the trials, and many errors, to succeeding. Successful people know how to overcome adversity because success is in the “overcoming”.
Success is 99 percent failure. -Soichiro Honda
One of the many things on my daily to-do list, is to learn and be inspired by people who have gone before me building successful online businesses, rebounded from financial devastation, and overcame adversity.
Turn your wounds into wisdom. -Oprah Winfrey
When going through a tough chapter of your life, they say it’s good to surround yourself with positive people. Being around people who drain your energy like emotional vampires, just digs you in deeper to your distress and doesn’t solve any problems.
That is why I like to walk with Rachel, Hillary, Jenna, Shereen, and Christine. These girls have inspired me to stay positive, believe in a better tomorrow, and learn a ton of new things.
5 Podcasts About Overcoming Adversity
Rise Podcast with Rachel Hollis
I love Rachel because she is so real. She begins every podcast with her intro:
Hello, I’m Rachel Hollis. I’ve built a 7 figure multi-media company with a high school diploma and the free information I found on the internet.”
Rachel is my peeps. We are both Enneagram 3s and had to Rise from adversity. Most of the time it’s Rachel talking, but sometimes she interviews very interesting people who have amazing insights to overcoming situations or building mega-profitable businesses. Some guests are Rob Lowe, Tim McGraw, and John Maxwell. This podcast is for anyone trying to level-up their life while overcoming adversity.
One of my favorite episodes on Rise, is #82 What Success Really Means with John Maxwell.
I love Second Life and am thrilled every time I see another episode pop up on my phone. Second Life is about women in creative fields who stumbled upon their second life, (or second, third, or fourth career). She starts with a question about what they wanted to be when they grew up, walks with them through their seemingly unrelated early careers, and ends with how they found themselves and what their gifts to the world really are.
Hillary Kerr is the host and interviews many interesting women restauranteurs, fashion designers, models (like Cindy Crawford), authors, and influencers of all kinds. These women (we find out) are so incredible because they are just like you and me! I would love to tell you my favorite episode but I don’t even know where to begin. Every one of the women she interviews is truly amazing. In a really good recent episode, Hillary interviews Ayesha Curry who is a chef, restauranteur, cookbook author, and culinary entrepreneur.
Hillary Kerr is not only the host of Second Life but the Co-founder of Who, What, Wear, an online publication featuring fashion and beauty.
Goal Digger Podcast
The first time I heard Jenna Kutcher on Goal Digger, I had to turn my volume down. She’s loud, a fast talker and sometimes you have to be in the mood for that. (or maybe that’s just me)
This is the podcast to turn to for tactical information for the “how to’s” Jenna does talk about mindset, but most of her episodes are about different facets of business building. Providing step-by-step instruction for creating an online business or pivoting an existing business.
Right now, so many people have lost their businesses due to the pandemic lock downs. Here, on Gold Digger, they talk about how to pivot your business. A very relevant topic these days.
There are many times while walking I can’t wait to write down everything I learned, from listening, when I get home.
Awaken The Rebel with Shereen Thor
Shereen Thor is a comedian turned life coach. She swears a lot. She’s raw and real. Shereen is like that girlfriend you have fun drinking with on Friday nights but whose honesty helps you become a better person. She’s not afraid to tell you that your top doesn’t go with your skirt. Spending time with Shereen will actually help you to learn things about yourself and how to do things better. Or at least have a healthier mindset about doing things the same way as before. 😉 You choose.

UnStyled by Refinery29
Hosted by Refinery29’s Global Editor in Chief & Co-founder, Christine Barberich. Christine explores the funny, inspiring, sometimes heartbreaking tales of life, work, and love. She interviews a slew of interesting celebrities and business owners who conquer adversity and share their struggles and accomplishments. Love this pod!
One of my favorite episodes is with Stacy London from What Not To Wear. Stacy explains how she overcame adversity after a year of a “life-quake” with dealing with grief, a breakup, spinal surgery, and vanishing finances.
It’s inevitable that we will encounter some of life’s bumps in the road. Everyone has to deal with some sort of adversity at different times of their life. But, it’s during times of struggle that we can choose to dig deep and overcome our challenges, and find out who we were meant to be.
Listening to some inspirational podcasts by some incredible women are what I look forward to tuning into every day. Actually, it’s one way to begin to make the most out of every day.
